There are two varieties of "Ranch" dressing in the US

1

One of them, by far the more common, is a commercially prepared, mayo-based condiment that is salty, onion-and-garlicky, and slightly sweet with a little bit of acid.

2

The second variety is homemade. It tends to be a little thinner than the commercial version, and a whole lot sharper: raw onion and garlic flavors, lemon juice as well as buttermilk, plenty of black pepper, and no sugar.

· ¼ cup buttermilk · ½ cup mayonnaise · ¼ cup sour cream · 1 ½ teaspoons dry parsley flakes · ¼ teaspoon black pepper · 1/3 teaspoon onion powder · 1/3 teaspoon garlic powder · 1/3 teaspoon kosher or sea salt
